Sydney Cup 2013 won by Mourayan

Owner Lloyd Williams has added another major staying trophy to his achievements in racing, with Mourayan winning the $500,000 Sydney Cup at Randwick on Saturday.

Williams has few peers when it comes to his involvement with stayers, claiming the latest of his three Melbourne Cup triumphs with Green Moon last year.

Mourayan finished seventh to Green Moon at Flemington, but he appreciated the lesser opposition – and a brilliant ride from Hugh Bowman – to win on Saturday.

Bowman had Mourayan racing midfield on the rails before he took up a spot in the running line as the tempo increased from the 1400m.

Easing to the centre of the track, Mourayan joined in at the 200m and asserted his authority to outstay Tasmanian galloper Norsqui.

Aliyana Tilde, which was being hailed the winner when she took a spilt in the straight, finished third just ahead of New Zealander Blood Brotha.

“God what a ride. You can see why he’s the best in Australia. He just summed that race up,” Williams’s son Nick said of Bowman.
