Carlton take on Adelaide for Round 5, with the Blues winning their first game of the season last week against the Eagles.  Carlton are favoured by some to win this match due to recent form and a strong home ground advantage, especially when you consider this will be Adelaide’s first game in Melbourne all year.  The Crows will be very hard to beat however, even without the talent of Scott Thompson and Crouch in the line-up.

Blues star Waite nearing AFL return

Carlton key forward Jarrad Waite might finally be on the verge of his much-anticipated AFL return.

Coach Mick Malthouse said Waite will play for the Blues’ VFL affiliates the Northern Bullants on Sunday against Port Melbourne.

Waite is one of the Blues’ most important players and a key to their finals aspirations.

But he is yet to play in the AFL this season.

He was enjoying a strong preparation before suffering a calf muscle injury two months ago.

Malthouse said the club would have to see how well Waite recovered from Sunday’s game before knowing how far he was from an AFL return.

“He could go one week, he could go two weeks,” Malthouse said.

“It depends on how he pulls up.

“It’s not a matter of how many goals he kicks or how many (possessions) … it’s a matter of getting through, understanding his body, which he does, (and) us understanding he can get through a game.

“The system is get it right and let’s not be rushed into anything, regardless of (the) result this weekend or who we play next weekend.”

The 30-year-old has had a bad run with injury, also missing half of last season because of a back problem.

“He’s like any player – he doesn’t really want to have ‘patience’ listed next to his name,” Malthouse said.

“He just wants to get out there.

“But unfortunately, he’s had to be reasonably patient over that period because that leg just didn’t respond early on.

“It has probably in the last month … he’s had to do a mini pre-season.”

In more good news for the Blues, small forward Eddie Betts will resume from a jaw fracture in Saturday’s MCG twilight match against Adelaide.

Carlton had their first win of the season last week with an upset of West Coast in Perth.

Their new coach is pleased with the way the team is progressing.

“You’re hounded and hounded and hounded if you’re not winning and sometimes you go ‘when are we going to get there?,” Malthouse said.

“But when you do win, what it does is clarify a few things.

“The significance (is) we haven’t been playing bad football – we haven’t been playing good football long enough.”

While Adelaide are yet to return to the form that took them to last year’s preliminary finals, Malthouse is wary.

He said they are a good-quality group who play disciplined football.

Crows key forward Taylor Walker will be a massive challenge for the Blues defence.

Malthouse said Walker had the similar attributes to legendary key forwards Tony Lockett and Jason Dunstall.

“He has a lot of time to prove that, but he’s only a young bloke and he’s powerful,” Malthouse said of the lofty comparison.

“He’s not six foot six, he’s that … front-end player who has great strength, great kicking power.

“He plays for his teammates and kicks goals.”
