Magoffin impresses in Sussex County win

Steve Magoffin claimed a debut seven-wicket haul as Sussex inflicted a heavy County Championship defeat inside three days upon champions Lancashire at Liverpool.

Magoffin added the scalps of Ashwell Prince for 58, Glen Chapple, Kyle Hogg and Simon Kerrigan to the three wickets he took during the latter stages of day two as the hosts were bowled out for 176 in their second innings.

He contributed to a 10-wicket win with figures of 7-34 from 19.5 overs, signalling the second best innings haul of his career.

Ed Joyce swept the one run needed for victory off Kerrigan’s third ball of the innings to claim 22 points just after lunch.

Magoffin played a crucial role with bat and ball in Queensland’s Sheffield Shield final win over Tasmania at the Gabba last month despite suffering a back injury during the first day that left him struggling to get out of bed.

And, if today’s performance is anything to go by, Sussex have completed a shrewd bit of business by signing the tall 32-year-old as their overseas player on a deal that will be reviewed in June.

His fifth wicket came when Lancashire skipper Chapple guided him to first innings centurion Michael Yardy at first slip, virtually sealing a first win of the campaign at the second attempt following defeat at Surrey last week.
