Serbia, Austria into Davis Cup quarters

Serbia and Austria booked their places in the last eight of the Davis Cup with wins in the opening rubber of the reverse singles on Sunday.

Serbia reached the quarter-finals when Janko Tipsarevic defeated Michael Ryderstedt 6-2 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 to secure an unbeatable 3-1 lead over Sweden, setting up a clash with the Czech Republic in the next round

The Serbs, playing without world No.1 Novak Djokovic, won both opening rubbers on Friday before Sweden stayed alive by winning the doubles on Saturday.

Austria progressed when Jurgen Melzer defeated Alex Bogomolov Jnr 6-2 6-4 6-1 for an unbeatable 3-1 lead over Russia in the first round tie.

They will next play Spain, who were already assured of qualification after winning Saturday’s doubles against Kazakhstan for a 3-0 lead.

It is the first time since 1995 that Austria have reached the last eight of the competition.
