Djokovic beats Haas at Hopman Cup

Serbian world No.1 Novak Djokovic has destroyed German Tommy Haas 6-2 6-0 in their Hopman Cup tie at Perth Arena.

Ana Ivanovic can wrap up the tie – and a place in Saturday night’s final against Spain – with victory over Tatjana Malek in the women’s singles rubber later Friday night.

Djokovic was left stunned on Wednesday night when he suffered a straight sets loss to Australia’s Bernard Tomic.

But the five-times grand slam winner was in hot form against Haas, who try as he might couldn’t match the powerful Serbian.

Djokovic needed just 62 minutes to beat Haas, striking 33 winners to 12 and making just nine unforced errors compared to Haas’ 21.

“I’ve had a few more hours of sleep. It’s great. I came out on court today feeling much fresher than the opening few days. I’m glad I could get a point for Serbia,” Djokovic said.

“Tommy’s a very talented player. He’s been struggling with injuries for the last few years.

“He’s very persistent to come back into the top ten. I wish him all the best for the Australian Open.”

Australia needs Germany to win the tie in order to make the final.

Earlier Friday in a tie with no bearing on the finals line-up, South Africa beat France 2-1 when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had to retire in the deciding mixed doubles with a groin injury.

Chanelle Scheepers beat France’s Mathilde Johansson 4-6 6-4 6-4 before Tsonga defeated Kevin Anderson 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-3) during which the French player appeared to slightly injure his groin while stretching for a shot during a rally.

Scheepers and Anderson won the first set of the mixed doubles 6-3 and were trailing 2-1 in the second when Tsonga indicated he could not continue.
