Sydney Sixers vs Perth Scorchers Preview

BBL big dogs Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers complete their regular-season series just five days after a hastily-arranged showdown on the Gold Coast.

The Sixers were scheduled to play the Heat on Tuesday, but the Scorchers answered the call to fill in when COVID-19 tore through the Brisbane ranks. The Scorchers defied the chaotic lead-up to the BBL|10 final rematch to win by 10 runs.

Lower-order batters Aaron Hardie (45 off 24) and Ashton Agar (29 off 20) helped the Scorchers reach 8/143 after they had slumped to 5/69 in the 13th over. Hayden Kerr (4/32) and Dan Christian (2/14) were the pick of the Sixers’ bowlers.

After the Sixers crumbled to 4/16, Christian (73 off 61) set about rescuing his team with the bat. But he was the only Sixers batter to make more than 16 and their chances evaporated when Andrew Tye (3/17) dismissed him in the 19th over. Tymal Mills also took three wickets.

Sixers depleted, Scorchers rolled

The second-placed Sixers have not played since, their rescheduled clash with the Heat the following day again postponed. Their touring party has also confirmed positive COVID cases. Meanwhile, the Sixers lost veteran spinner Steve O’Keefe to a hand injury suffered in his return against the Scorchers. Englishman James Vince – player of the match in the BBL|10 final victory – has finished his stint in another blow.

The ladder-leading Scorchers were upset by the Thunder on Thursday after another underwhelming batting display. Cameron Bancroft (30 off 31) top-scored modestly, with a late Ashton Agar (22 off 10) flurry a rare highlight in Perth’s 9/133 from a rain-reduced 18 overs. The Thunder mowed down the total with an over and six wickets to spare, despite Andrew Tye removing both openers and producing a run out.

English import Mills is returning to the UK for international duty but Jason Behrendorff is set to return from a two-match rest and take his place in the bowling line-up. Mitch Marsh’s absence has been keenly felt, with the Scorchers – $1.80 favourites tonight – looking to previously in-form duo Colin Munro and Kurtis Patterson to find some runs.

Sixers opener Josh Philippe is also desperate for a return to form. After topping 70 three times in his first four innings, the opener has recorded ducks in the Sixers’ last two games.
