Melbourne Stars vs Adelaide Strikers Preview

Adelaide Strikers are Melbourne Stars have games in hand, but this shapes as a pivotal contest as both teams strive to climb off the bottom of the BBL ladder. The second-last Strikers have a 2-7 record but are only two points off fifth courtesy of their competition-high seven bonus points. The 3-5 Stars are five points off the pace but have played the least games of any team.

The rivals were originally scheduled to meet on Friday but the clash was postponed due to the number of COVID cases in the Stars’ camp.

The Strikers snapped a six-game losing streak on Wednesday when they thumped the Hurricanes by seven wickets at home. Peter Siddle (5/23) ripped through the ’Canes, who were 126 all out in the last over, before Matthew Short (72* off 44) hit five sixes to lead the Strikers to victory with 29 balls to spare.

The Stars have lost their last two games, going down to the Scorchers (50 runs) and Renegades (5 wickets) on consecutive days a week ago. Qais Ahmad (2/26) and Joe Clarke (52 off 32) performed well in an otherwise disappointing display against the heavyweight Scorchers. Hilton Cartwright (41 off 29) top-scored as a further depleted Stars side could only make 126 against the ’Gades.

Stars boosted by galaxy of big guns

Glenn Maxwell is isolating and will not play tonight, but nine Stars players are available again. The returning contingent is headlined by stand-in captain Adam Zampa, Marcus Stoinis, Joe Burns and Clarke.

Home-ground advantage proved crucial when these teams met twice in five days last season. The Strikers cruised to a five-wicket win with an over to spare in Adelaide, while the Stars produced a crushing 111-run victory at the MCG.

Short (257 runs at 32.12) is the Strikers’ leading runscorer, chalking up two half-centuries. Jono Wells (212 at 23.55) is next in the charts among Adelaide players.

Batting has been an issue for the Stars, too, with Cartwright (256 at 36.57) their leading scorer despite posting just one fifty. Clarke (203 runs at 29) boast three half-centuries. The dynamic Stoinis has struggled in BBL|11, scoring just 65 runs in five innings. Test squad member Nick Larkin has only had four innings (including an unbeaten half-century) but shapes as a key part of a potential Stars revival.

The Stars are $1.60 favourites – and while that appears a bit skinny, their superior array of batting talent gives them a distinct edge.
