Melbourne Renegades vs Melbourne Stars Preview

The BBL’s Melbourne rivals occupy the bottom two spots on the ladder with time running out before the playoffs. But the winner of the second derby of the season will find themselves in fifth spot at the end of the night.

The Renegades snapped a five-game losing streak by upsetting the Stars by 5 wickets last week at the MCG. A depleted Stars line-up mustered just 126 batting first. Hilton Cartwright (41 off 29) and fill-in opener Travis Dean (32 off 26) were their only batters to make more than 12 runs, while Nic Maddinson (3/20), Kane Richardson (3/24) and Reece Topley (3/27) all bowled brilliantly.

Aaron Finch’s half-century (50 off 40) underpinned a comfortable chase. Mackenzie Harvey (23* off 25) and X-factor sub James Seymour (17* off 14) finished the job with two overs to spare.

The Renegades made it back-to-back wins with a 5-wicket defeat of the Heat in Geelong last Thursday as Shaun Marsh (57 off 35) took Player of the Match honours. They’ve come back to earth with convincing losses to the Thunder (129 runs) on Saturday and Sixers (45 runs) on Tuesday, bowled out for 80 and 105, respectively.

The COVID-hit Stars have played two games since meeting the ’Gades – both earlier this week. They beat the Strikers (5 wickets) on Monday before going down to the ladder-leading Scorchers (47 runs) on Tuesday with the likes of Joe Clarke, Nick Larkin, Adam Zampa, Joe Burns and Beau Webster returning to the line-up.

Clarke produced a match-winning 83 off 58 against the Strikers and leads the Stars’ run charts (303 runs at 33.66). Webster (63 off 47) played a lone hand against the Scorchers.

Nathan Coulter-Nile has been named to return in a boost to the Stars’ bowling attack. Out-of-sorts superstar opener Marcus Stoinis is also in the frame to come back after being listed in the Stars’ 17-man squad. All-round Jack Prestwidge is back in the Renegades’ squad.

The Stars are short $1.55 favourites. The Renegades are a solid shout at $2.47 for the win but are very reliant on either Finch or Marsh carrying the innings.
