Brisbane Heat vs Melbourne Renegades Preview

Brisbane Heat are desperate to open their BBL|11 account when they host Melbourne Renegades on the Gold Coast on Monday night.

The Heat finished the first week of the Big Bash season 0-2. They went down by 7 wickets to the Thunder last Monday after setting a modest target of 141. Ben Duckett (46 off 35), Sam Heazlett (42 off 37) and Xavier Bartlett (26* off 18) were the only Brisbane batters to reach double figures.

Lacklustre batting again let the Heat down in a 6-run loss to the Scorchers two days later. Heazlett (34 off 17) and Xavier Bartlett (34* off 25) top-scored in their pursuit of 158 for victory.

BBL icon Chris Lynn (9 off 7 and 27 off 33) has struggled to get going so far. Meanwhile, Mujeeb Ur Rahman has been Brisbane’s most economical bowler with returns of 1/23 and 0/25.

The Renegades are 1-1 after two games against the Strikers. They won a thriller at Marvel Stadium on Wednesday by 2 runs on the back of the efforts of Mackenzie Harvey (56 off 46) and Player of the Match Zahir Khan (3/24), and a superbly-bowled final over from James Pattinson (1/27) as the ’Gades successfully defended their total of 153.

The return clash in Adelaide was less auspicious for the reigning wooden spooners, however. Kane Richardson (4/32), Reece Topley (3/22) and Zahir Khan (2/33) combined to bowl the Strikers out for 149. But the Renegades were skittled for just 100, their innings falling apart after the departure of openers Sam Harper (33 off 31) and Harvey (19 off 12).

Nic Maddinson returns from Australia A duty in a huge boost for the Renegades, who are still without injured veterans Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh. The new skipper has been in outstanding four-day form but has to adjust quickly to the T20 format. Josh Lalor also comes in to bolster the bowling attack.

The Heat are sweating on the potential inclusion of Australia A v English Lions players Mark Steketee, Michael Neser, Mitchell Swepson and English import Tom Abell.

The Heat won both clashes with the Renegades in BBL|10 comfortably – with Lynn instrumental on each occasion. The powerhouse opener top-scored with 50 off 40 as the Heat won by 5 wickets with 8 balls to spare in Canberra, while he blasted a team-high 52 off 30 in a total of 5/173 in Melbourne to set up a 26-run victory. Harper scored 57 off 32 for the Renegades in the latter encounter.

The teams can’t be split in the head-to-head market. Lynn and Maddinson can be game-breakers for the respective struggling batting line-ups, but the Renegades bowlers have started the summer in good shape and the visitors look the better bet here.
