TJ Smith Stakes results 2012 – Master Of Design

Beautifully-bred six-year-old Master Of Design has scored an upset win in the Group One TJ Smith Stakes at randwick.

By Redoute’s Choice out of the Last Tycoon mare Urge To Merge, Master of Design virtually assured himself of a stud career with his gutsy performance in Saturday’s $1 million 1200m sprint.

Trained by David Payne at Rosehill and ridden by Craig Williams, Master Of Design settled near the rear of the six-horse field early but finished strongly to narrowly down pacesetter Rain Affair with Hallowell Belle third.

“I don’t know what the official margin was but I felt I got there on the line,” Williams said.

“David Payne’s done a great job with him.”

Master Of Design was backing up a week after being beaten into third place as favourite in the Group Three Sebring Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill.

The victory was his seventh in 17 starts which have also yielded five placings for prizemoney in excess of $930,000.

“He’s always around the mark,” Payne said.

“He’s always had the ability.

“We’re all very happy now he’s won his Group One.”

Master Of Design paid more than $29 on the NSW TAB.
