Satono Glow set for 2026 Roman Consul Stakes challenge

The promising sprinter Satono Glow has already made one trip to Melbourne to commence her campaign, and if all goes according to plan, she’ll be making another towards the end of this month.

A minor setback prior to her scheduled Sydney resumption led trainers John O’Shea and Tom Charlton to divert their attention to Victoria. It was there that the three-year-old filly achieved a brilliant victory in the Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1100m) at Flemington.

While the option to remain in the southern capital was present, Charlton confirmed their decision to bring her back for Saturday’s Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill. They were confident she already had a solid grounding from her straight-course experience, with the ultimate goal being the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on October 28.

“This race – bringing her back home and preparing her from here – we thought would be preferable to going to the Danehill (Stakes),” Charlton said.

“She’s had two goes at the straight, so we don’t feel like we need to do that by any means. We know each time we’ve prepared her from Sydney and trucked her down (she’s won), so we’ll try to replicate that, all being well, in the Coolmore.

“The Roman Consul has such a good record going into the Coolmore in recent years and that was the main factor.”

Satono Glow, the sole filly in the Roman Consul Stakes field, was the subject of an Everest inquiry, with a slot holder contacting connections to gauge their interest in a start in the $20 million race.

Given her relative inexperience, the proposal was swiftly declined, but Charlton expressed hope that the circumstances would be different in 12 months’ time.

“We felt that wasn’t the right race for her. We’re trying to build her profile and she’s still young,” he commented.

“We didn’t think it was the right set-up for her at this stage. Hopefully next year.”

The stable will also field Peyton in the Rosehill feature. However, Charlton conveyed reservations about the colt’s chances after he missed his scheduled second-up run at Warwick Farm on September 23, having reared in the barriers and been a late scratching.

“We were hoping to go there, then here,” Charlton remarked.

“He hasn’t had the perfect preparation for it, but he needs to get racing before potentially looking at something like a Red Anchor Stakes at Flemington.

“If he can run well on Saturday he will come on significantly from it.”

Peyton is currently listed at $41, while Satono Glow – aiming to become the first filly to win the Roman Consul Stakes since Jolie Bay in 2012 – is the $2.90 second favourite behind the $2.60 market leader, Paradoxium.
