Group 1 star Gringotts has continued to elevate with every racing campaign, and his connections are confident that trend will persist as the rising six-year-old nears his next preparation.

After a stellar spring where he claimed victories in both the Big Dance (1600m) and The Gong (1600m), Gringotts returned in top form during the autumn to defeat the likes of Fangirl and Ceolwulf in the prestigious George Ryder Stakes (1500m).

He closed that campaign with a solid midfield result in the Doncaster Mile, finishing less than two lengths off the winner. Ciaron Maher’s Sydney lieutenant, Johann Gerard-Dubord, has been impressed by how much the gelding has matured during his time off.

“Gringotts looks outstanding,” Gerard-Dubord said.

“Every prep he looks better but he has come back stronger again and just looks so healthy.”

Gringotts is set to have a barrier trial this week at either Gosford or Warwick Farm as he builds toward a first-up run in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) on August 23.

While the Epsom Handicap (1600m) might see him weighted too heavily, the team sees the King Charles III Stakes (1600m) at Randwick as a prime goal for the carnival.

“He will likely start in the Winx Stakes and a race like the King Charles would be a nice race for him,” he said.

“There is the Champions Mile in Melbourne after that.”

Gringotts is sired by Per Incanto, who also produced stablemate and Group 1 All Aged Stakes champion Jimmysstar.

Jimmysstar is on track for an early August trial, with hopes high that he can secure a berth in the upcoming The Everest (1200m).

“He’s got the right credentials. He’s done a good job, he has done well at Randwick so I think he deserves one,” Gerard-Dubord said of Jimmysstar.

“He is still a bit wintery but he is a lot stronger. He looks like a real sprinter now.”

Like Gringotts, Jimmysstar is approaching six, and Gerard-Dubord notes that Per Incanto’s offspring typically improve over time—a hallmark of New Zealand breeding.

“They’re horses where, if you don’t rush them early, you usually get rewarded later,” he said.
