Champagne Stakes 2013 won by Guelph

Darley filly Guelph has produced a miraculous finish to win the Group One Champagne Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.

Coming from an impossible position after being held up in the middle of the field to the 200m, Guelph arrived right on the line to beat Fuerza by a nose.

“I thought she had too much to do when the leader kicked after they went so slow,” trainer Peter Snowden said.

Snowden said he had high hopes Guelph, winner of the ATC Sires’ Produce at her previous start, would be an even better racehorse next season.

“She comes from a good family. She’s got a good pedigree and I think she will train on,” he said.

Fuerza was set alight in the middle stages by veteran jockey Jim Cassidy, leading four lengths.

He maintained his advantage until well into the straight before before collared right on the line.

Equator chased gamely to take the minor placing, just ahead of Drago, a maiden performer who came from last.
