Wade stars as Aussies take control

Matthew Wade’s maiden Test century has completely turned around the third Test between Australia and the West Indies in Dominica.

Wade scored 106 to turn the match on its head as Australia lifted themselves from 7-212 at the start of the day’s play before being dismissed for 328 just before lunch on day two.

The 24-year-old, dropped by Kemar Roach when he was on 22, reached the milestone shortly before the break when he creamed a delivery through cover for four to start his celebrations.

It capped a magnificent turnaround for Australia, with Wade adding 159 runs alongside Mitchell Starc (53) and Ben Hilfenhaus (19) for the eighth and ninth wickets after Australia had been in trouble at 7-169 on day one.

Wade took a while to get going but eventually blitzed his way to his ton, scoring his second 50 off just 32 deliveries including three sixes.

The wicketkeeper-batsman was eventually dismissed by Windies spinner Shane Shillingford, who went on to remove Hilfenhaus and finish with career-best figures of 6-119.

Wade was caught well by Darren Bravo when the Windies fielder threw the ball in the air before crossing the boundary rope, re-entering the field of play and regathering the ball.

It was the second sharp piece of fielding on an otherwise poor morning for the Windies with Starc run out after he was too casual getting back to his crease.

Chasing a third run, Starc didn’t appear aware that fielder Kraigg Brathwaite had launched the ball to his end and wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh quickly broke the stumps as the Australian failed to ground his bat and was caught short.
