India made a solid start through Shikhar Dhawan (74) and KL Rahul (47). But the innings fell apart as Mitchell Starc (3/56), Pat Cummins (2/44) and Kane Richardson (2/43) struck regularly. Spinners Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar also took a big top-order wicket apiece to contribute to India’s total of 255 all out.
David Warner (128* off 112) and skipper Aaron Finch (110* off 114) picked off the target with ruthlessness and ease. Australia won the match with more than 12 overs to spare. Warner and Finch’s blistering start to the series is ominous for India, given the tourists have the likes of new Test star Marnus Labsuchagne and Steve Smith gagging for an opportunity at the crease as well.
Even Jasprit Bumrah – the world’s top-ranked ODI bowler – had no answer. He was tonked for 50 runs in seven overs. Meanwhile, India will be looking for more from their lower order batting, an increasing issue over the past 12 months.
Australia came from two-nil down to win their ODI series in India 3-2 last March. Their current run of three straight victories in India came after India won nine of the previous 11 one-dayers between the nations. Shikhar Dhawan (117) and Kohli (82) led India to a 36-run win over Australia at the World Cup in June.
Australia were $2.30 outsiders for the series opener. But they have been backed into $2.00 to seal the series in game two on the strength of Tuesday’s sizzling all-round display.
No team has more players capable of singlehandedly taking a game away from the opposition as India. But Australia are still the value option here.
