Excuse the déjà vu, but is this the grand slam Nick Kyrgios turns his ability and potential into success?

The erratic Aussie has started 2020 in fine form and is making all the right noises, suggesting he may be in the right mindset to shelve the histrionics and meltdowns that have plagued his career at this Australian Open.

Kyrgios’ ATP campaign included a stirring win over world No.6 Stefanos Tsitsipas. But it was his attitude and demeanour that arguably impressed as much as his tennis. The 24-year-old’s admirable commitment to the bushfire relief cause has also seemingly given his game unprecedented focus.

A typically rollercoaster 2019 season included giant-killing tournament wins at the Mexican Open and Washington Open. He currently sits at No.26 in the world.

Kyrgios dipped out in the first round of an Australian Open for the first time last year after getting a tough draw against Milos Raonic. But he boasts a handy 22-6 career record in first-round slam matches. He reached the third round at the US Open in September.

Lorenzo Sonego isn’t attracting much attention ahead of his showdown with the homegrown favourite. But the world No.52 won his first ATP title at the Antalya Open last year and successfully defending his ITF Genoa title.

Sonego, 24, has competed at six grand slams, reaching the second round three times. He upset Robin Haase on Australian Open debut in 2018 but lost in qualifying last year.

But Sonego is currently on a seven-match losing streak, including first-round exits at the Qatar and Auckland Opens to kick off 2020.

Kyrgios won the pair’s only previous meeting 7-5 6-4 at last year’s Cincinnati Masters.

As is often the case, Kyrgios’ biggest obstacle here is his own temperament. This is a good first-up test.
