Geelong Cup 2013 winner shortens in Melbourne Cup odds

The Peter Moody-trained Ibicenco has firmed from $101 into $61 for the Melbourne Cup with Betstar following a brave win in the Geelong Cup on Wednesday.

The Geelong Cup has recently become a solid form guide for the race that stops a nation, with Americain (2010) and Dunaden (2011) winning the Geelong-Melbourne Cup double in the last few years.

Despite the win, there is still doubt over whether Ibicenco will gain a start in the Melbourne Cup.

“It was a solid win from Ibicenco in what was a below par Geelong Cup,” Betstar’s Alan Eskander said.

“Whilst the horse is going well, the win here today is far from guaranteeing him a start in the Melbourne Cup. He will probably need a penalty of 1.5kg to assure himself a run and I just can’t see him getting it at this stage. ”

Meanwhile Geelong Cup favourite Forgotten Voice struggled on the soggy track, and has consequently been wound out in Melbourne Cup betting.

“Forgotten Voice was a failure on the wet track, which was predicted on his UK form and resulted in him drifting from $2.70 out to $3.40 before the race today. He has also drifted from $41 out to $101 in the Melbourne Cup,” Eskander said.
