Caulfield Guineas 2026: Draw a positive for Call Me Coach

Rod ‘Rocket’ Douglas recalls the barrier draw for the 2019 Caulfield Guineas with clarity.

Douglas, acting as racing manager for owner Jonothan Munz, undertook the task of drawing the Caulfield Guineas barriers for Anthony Freedman’s stablemates, Super Seth and Groundswell, leading up to the 2019 event.

Super Seth ultimately started from barrier four, after Douglas had selected gate five earlier in the week. A subsequent scratching from an inside position for Super Seth ensured a place for Groundswell, who went on to finish third.

With the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) scheduled for Saturday, Douglas was present at the Guineas barrier draw on Tuesday. He drew barrier 5 for Call Me Coach, a colt owned by Munz and trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, having previously watched the colt’s workout at Caulfield.

Called upon first, Douglas selected barrier 5 for Call Me Coach, who will wear the same silks as Super Seth and be ridden by Mark Zahra, the jockey who guided Super Seth to a narrow victory over Alligator Blood.

“We wanted somewhere between three and six as he’s an inexperienced horse,” Douglas said.

“It’s the same barrier I picked with Super Seth who eventually jumped from barrier four.

“Hopefully it’s a good omen.”

The Freedman father-and-son training partnership will also field Wolf Gap, who drew barrier four and will be ridden by Ethan Brown.

Sam Freedman stated that Brown has gained valuable experience with Wolf Gap, having ridden the colt when it finished fourth in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) on September 19.

Super Seth had an unplaced performance in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude prior to its Guineas win.

A field of 11 runners is set to compete in the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on Saturday, with champion trainer Chris Waller planning to have four representatives in the contest.

Tron Bolt (11), Diameter (9), Central Europe (7) and Somethings Burnin’ (3) will carry Waller’s hopes, and all four were present at Caulfield on Tuesday morning for a gallop.

The Bjorn Baker-trained Golden Rose victor, Warwoven, retained its leading status in the Caulfield Guineas betting at $2.50 after securing barrier six.

Warwoven is expected to arrive from Sydney on Thursday and will be stabled with Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young at Cranbourne, who are set to have Blind Raise in Saturday’s race.

Blind Raise boasts an unbeaten record in two starts this campaign, winning first-up at Sandown on September 5 before taking out the Guineas Prelude last time.

With Blake Shinn confirmed as the rider, Blind Raise firmed from $3.50 to $3.40 following the draw of barrier two.
