Melbourne Stars launch their BBL campaign against competition favourites, the Sydney Sixers, on Sunday night but one TAB punter will be more interested in individual performances than the result.

The punter is adamant Marcus Stoinis or Glenn Maxwell will be the Stars’ leading runscorer for the tournament, placing two $30,000 bets on Stoinis at $2.40 and $49,000 worth of bets on Maxwell at $3.

They will get back $147,000 if Maxwell is the Stars’ leading runscorer and $144,000 if it is Stoinis.

Stoinis is $7.50 favourite to make more runs than any other player this season, just clear of Josh Philippe ($8) and $9 trio Alex Hales, Darcy Short and Matthew Wade, while Stoinis’s Stars teammate Adam Zampa is $7.50 favourite to be the tournament’s leading wicket-taker.

Despite Stars players heading those markets, the Sixers are $4.50 favourites to win the title and have attracted 27 percent of the money bet. The Hobart Hurricanes ($6.50) have been the next most popular at 20 percent ahead of $5 second elects, the Perth Scorchers, who hold 17 percent.
