The battle for a berth in the $5 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) is heating up, with Saturday’s Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) shaping as a crucial stepping stone for several contenders.
A total of 29 horses remain in contention for a Caulfield Cup start, while 11 are set to line up in the Herbert Power — a race that offers the winner a coveted ballot exemption into next week’s feature. Among those chasing automatic entry are Post Impressionist, Young Werther, Brayden Star and Plymouth, all of whom must win to book their spot.
One runner not eyeing the Caulfield Cup but still set to contest the Herbert Power is Whisky On The Hill, who will use the race as part of his build-up toward the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 4.
Trainer Glen Thompson said the stayer lacks the sharpness for the Caulfield Cup but will relish the extended trip of the Melbourne Cup. “He’ll run Saturday then most likely the Geelong Cup or the Moonee Valley Gold Cup as we’re just trying to get him into the Melbourne Cup,” Thompson said.
“We decided not to focus on Caulfield as his aim all the way through has been the Melbourne Cup. I don’t think he’s classy enough to win the Caulfield Cup and finishing a nice fifth, sixth or seventh doesn’t help you get into the Cup. I’d rather go to Geelong or Moonee Valley, where you’re guaranteed a start and a genuine chance of winning.”
Whisky On The Hill heads into Saturday’s race on the back of a tough win in the Listed Ansett Classic (2400m) at Mornington on September 28, a performance that showed both grit and determination. “He’s a horse that needs things his way and he’s capable of winning anything,” Thompson said. “Nothing had gone right, but it fell into place at Mornington. He was held up coming around the corner and didn’t get out until the 150 metres — it ended up being a very good win.”
