Radwanska wins Auckland title

Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska produced another impressive counter-attacking display to take out the Auckland Classic tennis title with a straight-sets victory over Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer.

The Polish world No.4 won 6-4 6-4 as her variety of shot and court craft prevailed against a harder-hitting opponent on Saturday.

Wickmayer, the third seed, showed plenty of spirit to hit some big winners to stave off five match points spread over the last two games.

But just as she paid for errors earlier on against her fellow 23-year-old, she put a cross-court backhand wide to hand Radwanska her 11th career WTA singles title on her first trip to Auckland.

Radwanska claimed the championship without dropping a set through her five matches.

It was world No.23 Wickmayer’s third appearance in the Classic final and followed her victory in 2010 and runner-up finish a year later.
