The highly anticipated Cox Plate showdown between Yulong Stud’s mares Treasurethe Moment and Via Sistina remains a possibility after encouraging news on Treasurethe Moment’s recovery.
Sam Fairgray, Yulong’s Chief Operating Officer, confirmed the dual Oaks winner is back at Matt Laurie’s stable following a short hospital stay for a mild colic episode. Connections are hopeful she can resume her spring preparation in time to target the Group 2 Feehan Stakes (2000m) at Moonee Valley on September 26 as her next start.
Should all go well, the Group 1 Might And Power Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on October 11 shapes as the key stepping stone to the $5 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 25.
Only last week, Yulong confirmed the two mares would avoid clashing before the Cox Plate, with Treasurethe Moment scheduled for the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) while Via Sistina looked set for the 7 Stakes or the Underwood Stakes. Treasurethe Moment’s setback forced a reshuffle, with Via Sistina now locked into the Makybe Diva Stakes this Saturday before heading to the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 4.
Fairgray reported positive signs on Tuesday. “She’ll have an easy few days and then Matt will start to step her back up again,” he told SEN. “After the Feehan, then we’ll decide if she goes to the Might And Power with the Cox Plate still on the plan. Obviously, we’ll let her tell us and if for any reason she’s not ready for those races we’ll give her more time as there’s plenty of options.”
Fairgray added: “It was only a light bout of colic. The signs are all very positive and it would be good to see her in the Cox Plate and match up with all the best ones.”
