Trainer Peter Snowden remains confident Raging Force can make his mark in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes, despite taking an unusual path toward the $2 million feature on Derby Day at Flemington.
Snowden is eyeing off a tilt against older sprinters in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday week, rather than contesting the more traditional lead-up races.
The Randwick conditioner has opted not to send the gelding to this weekend’s Group 2 Danehill Stakes worth $300,000 and is even considering a trial before his next racetrack appearance since his disappointing Run To The Rose effort.
In that 1200-metre Group 2, the son of Cosmic Force over-raced in front and faded to finish seventh, beaten 4-1/2 lengths by Tempted. Snowden said the gelding has recovered well from that outing and might benefit from a quiet trial.
“He had a gut-buster,” Snowden said of the Run To The Rose run.
“He went way too hard the other day. I gave him an easy week and he is nice and bright again now.
“The trial is nothing more than just a jump out and relax him.”
The 1100-metre Schillaci Stakes, run under weight-for-age conditions, is set to feature top-class sprinter Giga Kick as a first-up option, providing a stiff test for Raging Force should he line up.
If Snowden decides to remain in Sydney, the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill — also worth $300,000 — would be available on the same day as the Schillaci.
Raging Force had firmed in Coolmore Stud Stakes markets after stringing together four straight wins before the Run To The Rose, but is now rated a $15 chance. Meanwhile, Rosberg, Tentyris and Legacy Bound are prominent among the 14 Danehill Stakes entries.
