Price pair well tried to win Thoroughbred Club Cup

Mick Price will saddle up two of the best supported runners in early betting for a stakes race at Caulfield.

Debutant Epic Moment and the previously raced Oregon’s Day will contest Saturday’s Listed Thoroughbred Club Cup over 1200m.

Punters have stepped in and supported Epic Moment from $8 to $6.50 while his stablemate has shortened from $15 to $9.

Epic Moment is from the Desert Sun mare Song Of The Sun who is a half-sister to Scandinavia, the grand-dam of undefeated champion Black Caviar.

A $675,000 yearling purchase, Epic Moment has the breeding to be a future star as a son of Snitzel.

But Price is guarded after two Caulfield jump-outs.

Price said he was hopeful instead of expecting a forward showing from Epic Moment who has won two Caulfield jump-outs in consecutive weeks, the latest over 650m on April 19.

“I wouldn’t say he’s been impressive in the jump-outs so he has to go out and do it under pressure,” Price said.

On the other hand Price was delighted with the debut performance of Oregon’s Day in her fast-finishing second to the Darren Weir-trained Perpetual Crisis at Terang on April 17.

A daughter of Domesday, Oregon’s Day was slow to begin over 1000m before coming widest in the straight.

Price is expecting the rise to 1200m on Saturday to help.

“It was a really, really good run at Terang,” Price said.

“She duffed the start, got out the back and then motored.

“She’s improved and if she can get a bit of black type by running a place, or better, then that would be great.”

The early support for the Price pair, along with money for the Lee and Anthony Freedman-trained Curvature, has seen those at the top of the market being easy.

The Godolphin two-year-old Dissolute, a last-start fast-finishing second behind Valliano over Saturday’s course and distance a fortnight ago, has eased from $3.20 to $3.60 while impressive Sandown winner Highland Beat, who contested the Blue Diamond Stakes in February, has drifted from $4 to $6.50.
