Faf du Plessis hit 137 and Dean Elgar 91 not out to maintain South Africa’s complete dominance over New Zealand in the second cricket Test at St George’s Park on Saturday.
Du Plessis reached his second Test century and Elgar followed up with his highest score to lead the top-ranked Proteas to 7-505 at tea on the second day.
Hashim Amla (110) made the first century of South Africa’s innings on day one but added just four to his overnight score before he was dismissed by Trent Boult.
Newcomers Du Plessis and Elgar combined for a 131-run partnership following Amla’s fall to ensure there was no letup for New Zealand’s bowlers before a late spell by debutant Colin Munro (2-40) prevented South Africa inflicting more damage.
