Melbourne remains TAB’s $5 outright favourite to win this year’s AFL premiership despite its loss to Collingwood, but the weekend’s results merely consolidated the market’s position as the tightest in recent memory with six teams between $5 and $8.
Geelong charged back to its pre-season quote of $5.50 for the first time since Rd 1 after its win over Port Adelaide and subsequent support. The Cats were the subject of a $1000 bet, at $6.50, just prior Thursday night’s match, while TAB took an additional $1000 bet at $6 yesterday.
Geelong shares the second line with the Western Bulldogs, whom it meets in a mouth-watering start to Rd 14. Richmond and Brisbane are just 50 cents further back at $6, while the Power were $7 out to $8 after the loss to the Cats.
There was even interest in Collingwood yesterday with one punter placing $100 on the Magpies at to win the flag $251 during the Queen’s birthday match. The Maggies, who are three wins and percentage astern the eighth-placed Tigers, are now $201 in flag betting.
