Eels to name Stuart as coach

NSW State of Origin mentor Ricky Stuart is set to be unveiled as Parramatta’s new NRL coach on Friday.

The former Canberra and Australia halfback, who has previously coached the Sydney Roosters and Cronulla in the NRL, will succeed Stephen Kearney at the Eels after the New Zealander quit the role last week.

Stuart is believed to have agreed to a three-year deal with the embattled Eels and will take up the role at the end of the current campaign.

Stand-in coach Brad Arthur has already been told he’ll take care of the first-grade side for the rest of the season.

Stuart’s acceptance of the Eels job is likely to put his position as Blues’ coach in jeopardy with the NSW Rugby League believed to be against having a club coach in charge of the Origin team.

The Eels sit bottom of the NRL ladder with four wins from 18 matches after last weekend’s shock victory over Melbourne at Parramatta Stadium.
