Cecchin, Hampstead axed for Origin II

Referee Matt Cecchin has been axed for the second State of Origin rugby league match in Sydney on Wednesday week along with video referee Sean Hampstead.

Veteran whistleblower Tony Archer is recalled for his 11th Origin encounter and will be on-field at ANZ Stadium with Ben Cummins, who officiated with Cecchin in the series opener in Melbourne.

Hampstead, who was at the centre of controversy over Greg Inglis’ late try in Queensland’s 18-10 win at Etihad Stadium, has been replaced by Steve Clark in the video ref role.

Referees boss Bill Harrigan played down the decision to axe Cecchin and said competition for the job was high.

“We were pleased with the performances of the officials in Origin 1 but there is also enormous competition within this squad from officials who are striving to be a part of these big matches,” said Harrigan.

“Tony (Archer) himself found after game one last year that situations can change and we used four referees in the 2011 series.

“This year Tony was very close to being selected for the opening match and his ongoing performances have warranted his appointment for game two.”

“Ben has done well to hold his position, particularly given the overall performance of the squad at the moment.”
