Whincup claims V8 pole in Perth

Holden’s Jamie Whincup has placed more pressure on Ford rival Will Davison by claiming pole position for the Perth V8 Supercars round’s second race on Sunday.

Whincup leapfrogged Davison on the championship standings by finishing second in Saturday’s opening 120km event.

And the defending series champion has a chance to extend his 51 point lead over Davison by topping the time sheets for Sunday’s first race.

Whincup clocked 56.3260 seconds in a tight qualifying session using solely hard compound tyres.

In an unusual format, qualifying for Sunday’s second and final race will use solely soft tyres.

Mark Winterbottom – who won Saturday’s dramatic 50-lap event – was second fastest with 56.3289 while his Ford teammate Davison (56.3439) was third.

Davison is determined to reverse his fortunes after a first lap crash on Saturday ended any chance of claiming a seventh straight podium finish this season.

Somehow he managed to finish Saturday’s race with damaged suspension to at least collect 20 competition points and reduce Whincup’s championship lead.
