Lowndes takes V8 pole position

Holden’s Craig Lowndes has snared pole position as he chases a weekend double at the V8 Supercars event at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Lowndes beat teammate Jamie Whincup in a 20-minute qualifying session for Sunday’s 220km race at the Eastern Creek circuit, clocking a best lap of one minute and 29.2493 seconds.

The 38-year-old has won the past three V8 races, including Saturday’s 140km event at the revamped western Sydney circuit.

Whincup, who had a disastrous race on Saturday where he finished 23rd and relinquished his championship lead, will start alongside his teammate in second place after posting a 1:29.3821.

Holden’s Jason Bright secured third position on the grid with a 1:29.4061 with championship leader Mark Winterbottom to start behind Whincup in fourth spot.

Winterbottom’s Ford teammate Will Davison will start from fifth to ensure a mouth-watering start to Sunday’s race with all four of the championship contenders in the top five.

The race begins at 3.35pm.
