Doncaster Mile Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2021

It’s the jewel in the crown that is Day 1 of The Championships and typically, the 2021 Doncaster Mile looms as one of the standout races of the Autumn Carnival.

Some of our best open aged milers will step out alongside a smart three-year-old contingent and there is a case to be made for more than half of the capacity Doncaster Mile field of twenty.

I’ve had a crack, and you can find my 2021 Doncaster Mile tips below thanks to bookmaker Neds.

Doncaster Mile – Winner

Rock made up plenty of ground on a day where it was nearly impossible to last weekend, and I’m putting him on top of my Doncaster Mile tips at a big old price ($26 at publish).

The Pierro gelding has been a great horse for the Hawkes stable throughout his career, and while he is yet to taste success at the highest level, he is a multiple black type winner and has form around some of our best horses.

Up until last weekend’s Prelude, he was unbeaten when second-up, but he is weighted well, drawn ideally and I’m confident he is a serious chance of pulling off the upset this week.

Doncaster Mile – 2nd

Kiwi raider Aegon was disappointing in the Randwick Guineas last time out, but he was unbeaten prior to that start and I’m confident he can bounce back with a competitive effort in the Doncaster Mile.

The Sacred Falls gelding won each of his first five career starts, highlighted by the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas and the Karaka Millions 3YO race, and he announced himself to the Australian racing community via a dominant effort in the Hobartville Stakes.

He’s a month between runs into this, he has returned a lovely trial since the Randwick Guineas and $13 about him in Doncaster Mile betting could prove to be overs.

Doncaster Mile – 3rd

Mugatoo was an impressive winner of the All-Star Mile last time out and has opened favourite in Doncaster Mile betting.

The Henrythenavigator gelding has been simply outstanding since arriving in Australia, but seems to have improved with each campaign, going to a new level in spring when finishing second in The Metropolitan and fourth in the Cox Plate most notably.

Those efforts were obviously usurped when he greeted the judge first at The Valley and earned connections a cool $2.25 million last time out, and I can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish again on Saturday.

Doncaster Mile – 4th

The impressive Rosehill Guineas winner will drop back two furlongs to contest the Doncaster Mile, and will carry just 49.5kgs for his troubles.

Mo’unga has always been an above-average galloper, but it is fair to say that he has gone to a new level under Annabel Neasham this time, and that was certainly on show when he recorded his first Group 1 win last time out.

I don’t think the drop in trip will be an issue and with even luck from the wide draw, he can certainly fight out the finish again.
