Champagne Stakes results 2012 – Pierro

The Gai Waterhouse-trained Pierro has completed the Sydney autumn carnival’s triple crown for two-year-olds with a runaway Group One Champagne Stakes win at Randwick.

Racing in the leading division throughout the 1600m race, Pierro burst clear to relegate Dear Demi and Tatra into the minor placings.

The Lonhro colt became the sixth horse to complete the triple crown after he won the Golden Slipper Stakes and the Sires’ Produce Stakes.

“This is a very, very special colt,” Waterhouse said.

Pierro began on terms for Nash Rawiller and he settled kindly before powering to the front at the 300-metre mark.

He established a clear advantage soon after to have the $400,000 race in his keeping.

“What he’s done today is terribly hard to do and he’s made it look easy,” Rawiller said.

“Just what this (horse) has been able to achieve has been phenomenal.”

Dear Demi ran on from the back to finish second with Tatra taking the minor placing after racing in the box set.

Pierro, who was sent out the short-priced favourite, is unbeaten in six starts and his earnings are now close to $3 million.
