Black Caviar sells out crowd at Morphettville

A sell-out crowd of around 30,000 is expected to flock to Morphettville on Saturday to see Black Caviar attempt an Australasian record 20th consecutive metropolitan victory in the Group One Sportingbet Classic.

Also expected when final acceptances close for the $400,000 1200m fillies and mares weight-for-age feature on Tuesday morning is that there will be a small number of rivals taking on the world’s highest rated sprinter.

Last year’s Goodwood winner Lone Rock is a confirmed starter along with Valentine Miss, Sistine Angel and Perth raiders Power Princess and All Friared Up.

Black Caviar will have a fast gallop at Caulfield on Tuesday morning before heading to Adelaide on Wednesday.

Trainer Peter Moody said the mare would be floated straight home to his Caulfield stables before she travels back to Adelaide for the Group One $500,000 Goodwood (1200m) on May 12.

At the end of May or early June, Black Caviar will be flown to the UK for the Group One Diamond Jubilee (1200m) at Royal Ascot on June 23.

She currently shares the Australasian record set by Desert Gold in 1916 and emulated by Gloaming in December 1921.

Black Caviar is quoted at $1.05 with TAB Sportsbet to win the Sportingbet Classic ahead of Lone Rock at $15 with the rest of the field ranging from $21 to $301.

Premier Jay Weatherill said the event was a great opportunity for South Australia to promote itself to the rest of the nation and the world.

“Black Caviar will bring a huge national and international spotlight to Adelaide,” the premier said on Monday.

“All eyes will be watching Adelaide and it is going to be a great day for our state and for racing in South Australia.”

To help the day go smoothly the state government has arranged free public transport for all those heading to Morphettville racecourse.
