Graeme Smith hit his 25th Test century as South Africa reached 1-187 at lunch on day three of the first cricket Test at The Oval, to trail England by 198 on Saturday.
South Africa captain Smith was unbeaten on 103 with Hashim Amla 80 not out after the tourists resumed on 1-86.
England’s attack bowled tightly for the first hour without seriously troubling the batsmen and James Anderson, with figures of 1-38, remains the only bowler to have taken a wicket.
