England 1-29 v S Africa 309 – lunch

South Africa, after winning the toss, were dismissed for 309 on the second day of the third cricket Test against England at Lord’s on Friday.

Vernon Philander was last man out for 61, his maiden Test fifty and the joint top-score of the innings after JP Duminy was dismissed for the same total on Thursday.

Fast bowler Steven Finn took 4-75 on his Middlesex home ground as the Proteas, who had collapsed to 4-54, staged a gutsy late order rally.

They resumed at 7-262 on the second morning.

England were 1-29 in reply at lunch, a deficit of 280 runs.

Captain Andrew Strauss was bowled by Morne Morkel for 20 off the

last ball before lunch, leaving fellow left-handed opener Alastair Cook unbeaten on six.

South Africa lead this three-match series 1-0 and only need to avoid defeat at Lord’s to replace England as the world’s top-ranked Test side.
