WA pair head list for AFL mini-draft

West Australian 17-year-olds Jack Martin and Jesse Hogan head the list of nominations for the AFL’s 2012 Greater Western Sydney mini-draft.

The mini-draft is for 16 players whose birthdays fall between January 1 and April 30, 1995.

Clubs will have the opportunity to bid for one of two picks at the second and final mini-draft to be held at the end of this year’s trade period on October 26, the afl.com.au website reported on Thursday.

GWS were handed four picks to auction over a two-year period, which the successful bidders can use to select the best young players who aren’t yet old enough to nominate for the national draft.

The Giants received a package of first-round picks last year from Gold Coast and Adelaide. Those clubs were able to secure midfielders Jaeger O’Meara and Brad Crouch respectively.

Midfielder Martin and 193cm key-position player Hogan were named in the All-Australian side after starring in the 2012 AFL Under-18 Championships.

Another 2012 under-18 All-Australian Luke McDonald was eligible but didn’t nominate. McDonald is expected to join North Melbourne under the father-son rule in 2013.

The players to have nominated are: Nicholas Bourke (Kolora-Noorat, Geelong Falcons, Victoria), Jason Cooke (Sunbury Lions, Calder Cannons, Victoria), Matthew Crouch (Beaufort, North Ballarat Rebels, Victoria), Tom Cutler (Greythorn JFC, Oakleigh Chargers, Victoria), Luke Dunstan (South Clare, Woodville-West Torrens, SA), Billy Hartung (Mornington FC, Dandenong Stingrays, Victoria), Jesse Hogan (Marist JFC, Claremont, WA), Joshua Kelly (Brighton Grammar, Sandringham Dragons, Vic), Jack Martin (Towns FC, Claremont, WA), William Maginness (Glen Iris JFC, Oakleigh Chargers, Victoria), Isaiah Miller (Sandhurst FC, Bendigo Pioneers, Vic), Luke Reynolds (North Haven, Port Adelaide Magpies, SA), Dominic Sheed (John Paul College, Subiaco, WA), Lewis Taylor (Terang-Mortlake FC, Geelong Falcons, Victoria), James Tsitas (Grovedale, Geelong Falcons, Victoria), Dwayne Wilson (Murray Bridge Imperials, Sturt, SA).
