Magpies hand AFL debut to Irishman Mooney

Top-placed Collingwood have included Irishman Caolan Mooney to make his AFL debut against Fremantle at the MCG on Saturday.

The speedy 19-year-old was playing Gaelic Football last year but, on Sunday, will become the seventh debutant of the season for the Magpies, who are on a nine-game winning streak.

Fellow Irishman Marty Clarke was dropped.

The Dockers regain small forward Hayden Ballantyne from suspension, but are still missing midfield star Stephen Hill and key defender Zac Dawson.

Carlton’s key position strength took another hit, with the loss of Lachie Henderson (groin) for Friday night’s crunch meeting with Hawthorn, but Shaun Hampson returned.

The Hawks regained tough midfielder Jordan Lewis from suspension.

Richmond regained defenders Dylan Grimes and Steven Morris from injury for Saturday’s AAMI Stadium meeting with Adelaide and will give forward-ruckman Todd Elton an AFL debut.

The Tigers are still without midfielder Nathan Foley.

The Crows dropped Matthew Jaensch and Shaun McKernan after the shock loss to North Melbourne, but key forward Kurt Tippett kept his spot despite being concussed last round.

Port Adelaide have been decimated for Sunday’s Simonds Stadium encounter with Geelong.

They have lost skipper Dom Cassisi (hip) Matt Thomas (suspension), Hamish Hartlett (hamstring), Jackson Trengove (finger) and Jay Schulz (abdomen) and dropped Jarrad Redden.

Key forward John Butcher and key backman Alipate Carlile returned to their squad.

The Cats are yet to make any cuts.

Gold Coast have also been injury-hit for their huge assignment against West Coast in Perth on Saturday night.

The Suns lost Michael Rischitelli (hamstring), Seb Tape (knee), Rory Thompson (ankle) and Luke Russell (hamstring), although Jarrod Harbrow returns after a long absence.

The Eagles named Murray Newman for his AFL debut.

The Western Bulldogs lost veteran forward Daniel Giansiracusa (foot) and dropped Ayce Cordy, Mitch Wallis and Mark Austin from the side that was badly beaten by Brisbane last round.

Ruckman Will Minson returns from a club suspension and Ryan Hargrave from injury for Saturday night’s meeting with Essendon.

The Bombers lost Angus Monfries (hamstring).

Brisbane will be without defender Matt Maguire (elbow) for Sunday’s Gabba clash with Melbourne.

The Demons have lost key forward Mitch Clark (foot) for the season and will also be missing Aaron Davey (hamstring).

Sydney named an unchanged side for Saturday night’s meeting with Greater Western Sydney, who recalled veteran Chad Cornes after a rest.

St Kilda and North Melbourne are yet to make any cuts for Sunday’s important match at Etihad Stadium, but the Saints’ Rhys Stanley and Ahmed Saad could return from injury, after being included in their 25-man squad.

Captain Nick Riewoldt was named despite injuring a calf in the club’s most recent match.
