Horse Racing News: Godolphin’s new chapter kicks off in style

Godolphin’s new public training model could not have started better, with its first Sydney runner under the arrangement, Amusing, producing an emphatic victory in the opening race of the new season at Rosehill. The filly took out the Captivant @ Kia Ora Handicap (1500m) in dominant style, providing champion trainer Chris Waller with an immediate success for the global powerhouse.

Waller, long a rival to Godolphin, said it was an honour to now be training for Sheikh Mohammed’s operation and admitted to feeling the pressure before the race. “I was nervous coming into the race, just to make sure everything went well, so it was a big relief,” Waller said. “They’ve been our biggest competitor for so many years. We’ve always measured ourselves against them—they’ve been the ultimate benchmark. To now be one of the trainers chosen to work with them is an incredible honour.”

Godolphin’s decision to cease its private Australian training operation has seen nine horses join Waller’s stable, all of which he said arrived in excellent condition. “We’ve taken over from an exceptional operation,” Waller said. “The horses came into our system so well educated. My riders have all been impressed. James (Cummings) and the whole team at Godolphin have done a fantastic job.”

One key figure has remained constant between Amusing’s last win for Cummings and her first under Waller—former champion jockey Darren Beadman. The long-time Godolphin staff member has now joined Waller’s stable as part of the senior team, starting his new role on Saturday.

“It was a really special morning and this capped it off,” Waller said. “Having Darren on board is huge—he’s been my idol for so long. He was a big help to me when I started out, and I think with Charlie (Duckworth) and Darren working together, we’ll get even more out of ourselves and the team.”
