Newly crowned US Open champion Serena Williams has confirmed she will return for next year’s Brisbane International, which will feature world No.2 Maria Sharapova for the first time.
Days after clinching the US crown in New York world No.4 Williams locked in the Brisbane event despite not-so-fond memories of her 2012 debut in Queensland.
Last year she reached the Brisbane quarter-finals before succumbing to an ankle complaint.
Williams still went on to claim the Wimbledon title, Olympic singles and doubles gold in London as well as Flushing Meadows glory.
Reigning French Open champion Sharapova also enjoyed a stellar 2012, reigning in Paris while also reaching the Australian Open final and claiming Olympic singles silver.
The first player signed up for the tournament was current US Open champion Andy Murray.
The tournament will be held from December 30 to January 6.
