P – German second seed Tommy Haas advanced to the quarter-finals of the ATP Delray Beach International Championships on Thursday but American third seed Sam Querrey was eliminated.
Querrey double-faulted eight times in the match. He had led 4-0 in the third set but double-faulted at 30-40 when serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set.
He eventually lost 6-4 4-6 7-6 (7-4).
“I played a sloppy game at 4-1 and then, at 5-4, I played some tentative shots and the double-fault killed me and then it’s a 50-50 match after that,” Querrey said.
“It was just one of those days, one of those matches.”
Haas ousted Uzbek Denis Istomin 6-4 6-1, moving on in 67 minutes without facing a break point, while Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis – the world No.109 – outlasted Querrey 6-4 4-6 7-6 (7-4).
“It’s a little different with the cool weather and no wind today so it was very pleasant to play,” Haas said.
“I had a lot of chances early on that I didn’t take and frustrated me but, at 4-5, I broke him to win the first set and that mentally disturbed him a little bit.”
Next for Haas will be a Friday quarter-final against Croatian Ivan Dodig, who downed Russia’s Evgeny Donskoy 6-3 7-5.
Gulbis will face fellow qualifier Daniel Munoz, a Spaniard who outlasted Belgian eighth seed Xavier Malisse 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 6-3 to reach the last eight in a match that was halted on Wednesday in the first set by rain.
Lithuanian lucky loser Ricardas Berankis advanced by rallying to defeat American Jack Sock 3-6 6-4 6-1. His next opponent is France’s Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who accounted for Croatian Ivo Karlovic 6-4 7-5.
US top seed John Isner was to face Japan’s Go Soeda in a night match with the winner to face South African sixth seed Kevin Anderson or Taiwan’s Lu Yen-Hsun on Friday.
