Liverpool have rarely moved out of second gear in their title defence, but they sit second on the ladder with a 4-1-1 record. Slowly putting their horrific 7-2 loss to Villa behind them, Jurgen Klopp’s side has drawn with Everton (2-all) and beaten Sheffield (2-1) in the past fortnight. They have also beaten Ajax and Midtjylland to nil in the Champions League over the past 10 days.

West Ham, meanwhile, continue their early-season upswing. After losing their first two, Hammers scored a combined seven goals to nil in defeating Wolves and Leicester, then have pulled off shock draws against Tottenham and Man City. Only six teams have managed more than West Ham’s 12 goals to date.

A pair of draws is the best West Ham have managed in their last eight clashes with Liverpool. The eventual champs downed Hammers 2-0 at London Stadium and 3-2 at Anfield last season, with Mo Salah scoring in both games.

But West Ham’s recent form appears to be more than a fluky flash in the pan, while Liverpool are well short of their best.
