Chambers drama ‘storm in a teacup’: Coyne

Former Queensland star Mark Coyne is confident Will Chambers will line up for the Maroons in State of Origin III, despite being investigated for assault.

The rookie winger has been accused of pushing a patron and sparking a scuffle at a Brisbane bar in early on Wednesday morning.

Chambers had been with several teammates at the Down Under Bar at a late-night bonding session, barely 15 hours after being named to make his Origin debut.

Police and the Queensland Rugby League are both investigating the incident.

The alcohol-fuelled drama has put a cloud over Chambers’ involvement in Wednesday’s dead-rubber at Suncorp Stadium, but Coyne believes nothing will come of it.

“I think it’s a bit of a storm in a teacup,” he told Fox Sports News on Thursday.

“We’ve got to give Will the courtesy of letting the investigation go through.

“But I think Will will be lining up for the Maroons on Wednesday night.”

Coyne, who played 19 games for Queensland in the 1990s, said he’d only expect coach Mal Meninga to discipline him if the investigation proved Chambers was “really misbehaving”.

“But I do know that Mal is really big on values. He’s done a real good job on building the right culture within the Queensland team based on values,” he added.

“And I’m pretty sure, from the sounds of it, Will hasn’t broken any of those values and I’m pretty confident that Mal will just let him get on with the job.”

Coyne said there was no doubt players these days faced more intense scrutiny than during his era, especially whenever in public.

“I suppose it’s getting to the point now where players do need to be a bit conscious of that and be careful about how much they do go out,” he said.
