First big crash at Bathurst

The V8 Supercars Bathurst 1000 event at Mount Panorama had the first big crash of the weekend on Friday.

Championship contenders Shae Davies and Garry Jacobson collided at the top of the mountain in the Friday morning qualifying run of the Formula Ford category.

Jacobson couldn’t avoid Davies’ stalled vehicle at McPhillamy Park after Davies had spun out.

The impact sent both cars spinning and brought a premature end to the session.

Davies was able to walk from his car and was later cleared of serious injury but Jacobson was airlifted to hospital with a broken right arm and a suspected broken right leg.

Another driver, Anton De Pasquale gave an eyewitness account of the big smash.

“I saw the yellow flag just before I turned left at McPhillamy Park,” De Pasquale told motorsport website Speedcafe.com.

“Garry was ahead of me. He went left, I went right and I only just missed him. It was a pretty scary moment.”
