Spring Champion Stakes 2012 target for Proisir

The Spring Champion Stakes is a possible target for Proisir who maintained his unbeaten start to his career with victory at Rosehill on Saturday.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained colt overcame trouble at the start to win a Hawkesbury maiden on debut on August 1 and led all the way in the TVN Jockeys Trust (1400m).

Although jockey Nash Rawiller believes he will be a better horse in the autumn, Waterhouse says she will keep options open for a Group One this spring.

“I loved the way he relaxed today,” Waterhouse said.

“He was a horse who lived on his nerves.

“As long as he is right I think he can go quickly through his grades and maybe get to the Spring Champion Stakes 2012 this preparation.”

Sent out the $1.70 favourite, Proisir held off Norzita ($6) by 2-1/4 lengths with the Thousand Guineas-bound runner-up showing improvement on her unlucky last-start fifth.

“He is a lovely horse but he is still very raw,” Rawiller said.

“He relaxed beautifully today.

“I wouldn’t rule out the Spring Champion but he will definitely be a better horse in the autumn.”

The Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) is at Randwick on October 6 and Proisir also holds an entry in the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) a week later.

The race was named in honour of the National Jockeys’ Trust which supports the families of injured jockeys as well as those who have lost their lives on the racetrack.
