Shamexpress wins Newmarket Handicap 2013

Three-year-old Shamexpress has produced a sustained run from the back to snatch the Group One Newmarket Handicap at Flemington.

In a thrilling three-way finish, Shamexpress cut down the favourite Moment Of Change in the final stages of the $1 million race.

Moment Of Change recovered after dwelling at start to share the front in the straight-course speed test.

Black Caviar‘s stablemate appeared on course for victory when he extended his lead at the 200m.

But jockey Craig Newitt judged his run to precision and Shamexpress arrived in time to beat the favourite.

“I came here today confident this bloke could run really well … he was the forgotten horse,” Newitt said.

Sydney sprinter Aeronautical launched his bid on the inside to take the minor placing.

Trainer Danny O’Brien said winning the Newmarket was the culmination of a plan hatched after last year’s spring carnival.

“He came here in great shape and got the right ride from Craig and he let go like a top-class Group One sprinter,” O’Brien said.
