Hawkesbury Gold Cup Tips, Field Preview and Selections – 2020

The 2020 Hawkesbury Gold Cup has been transferred from Hawkesbury to Rosehill this year and the $160,000 Group 3 feature over 1500m has attracted a large field of sixteen.

Premiership winning trainer Chris Waller will saddle up six runners which includes the 2019 Sydney Cup winner Shraaoh, 2018 Australian Oaks winner Unforgotten and 2018 Metropolitan runner up Brimham Rocks as well as Girl Tuesday, Another Dollar and Tangled.

Archedemus will be looking for back to back wins in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup for new trainer Joe Pride after collecting the trophy last year for Kembla Grange trainer Gwenda Markwell.

We have analysed the entire field and our complete 2020 Hawkesbury Gold Cup tips can be found below!

Gaulois

Gaulois will carry the topweight of 59kg and is coming off a last start third in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude over 1500m at Rosehill a month ago. Gaulois was a winner three starts back in a 1600m Open Handicap at Warwick Farm and trainer James Cummings has given the five year old a quiet barrier trial to keep him up top the mark for the Hawkesbury Gold Cup. One of the top chances.

Shraaoh

Shraaoh was the winner of the 2019 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick and will be having his first run back since finishing sixth in the Group 2 Moonee Valley Gold Cup over 2500m at The Valley in October last year during the 2019 Melbourne Spring Carnival. Will be better suited over move ground.

Brimham Rocks

Brimham Rocks is having his first run back since finishing second in the Group 3 Bendigo Cup over 2400m at Bendigo during the 2019 Spring Carnival. Brimham Rocks’ last win was in the 2000m Group 3 MRC Foundation Cup at Caulfield in September and the Chris Waller trained six year old is yet to win at distances shorter than 2000m.

Unforgotten

Unforgotten is struggling to find her best form and she never threatened at her only 2020 Sydney Autumn Carnival start when eleventh in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill a month ago. Has to improve dramatically to be a threat here. Blinkers come off.

Mask Of Time

Mask Of Time went down narrowly last start when runner up in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude over 1500m at Rosehill a month ago at his second run back from a long break. The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained six year old looks well placed here and has to be included among the top chances.

Girl Tuesday

Girl Tuesday is another mare from the Chris Waller stable who is struggling to find the winner’s stall and will also have to improve quickly on her tenth in the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill a month ago to be in the mix in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup.

Archedemus

Archedemus was the winner of the Hawkesbury Gold Cup last year for trainer Gwenda Markwell but will step out for the first time for Warwick Farm trainer Joe Pride in this year’s version at Rosehill. Archedemus has trialled three times in preparation for his return to the track and the six year old has won first up in the past and the betting will be the best guide for his chances.

Amangiri

Amangiri has had two runs back from a spell and will line up in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup in cherry ripe condition. The Team Hawkes trained mare will be dropping back in grade after finishing ninth in the Group 1 Coolmore Legacy Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Day Two of the Championships and is better suited here.

Another Dollar

Another Dollar has been well beaten at his three runs this campaign and looks tested on his last start tenth in the Group 3 Epona Stakes over 1900m at Rosehill on March 21.

Royal Celebration

Royal Celebration is working his way up through the grades and is chasing a hat trick following wins at Rosehill and Warwick Farm in BenchMark 88 Handicaps. Up in grade here and will find this tough after drawing the outside gate.

Tangled

Tangled has been off the scene for eleven months and is yet to win first up. The Chris Waller trained five year old showed plenty of promise during his three year old season with three Group 1 placings in the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m), the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and in the Australian Derby (2400m). Tangled has had two barrier trials in preparation for his return, his latest a second over 1030m at Rosehill on April 20 and the betting will be the best guide.

Valentino Rossa

Valentino Rossa has been well beaten at his last two starts and will find this tougher than his last start tenth in a 1600m Warwick Farm BenchMark 88 Handicap on April 8.

Salsonic

Salsonic is up in grade following his latest thirteenth in a 1600m Warwick Farm BenchMark 88 Handicap on April 8.

Manolo Blahniq

Manolo Blahniq will appreciate a drop in weight and is not the worst on his last start fourth in the Group 3 Anniversary Cup over 1400m at Caulfield on April 11.

Aliferous

Aliferous has been thereabouts at her four runs during the Sydney Autumn Carnival with two seconds and two fourths. The Kris Lees trained mare is dropping back in distance after being runner up over 2000m in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood at Rosehill a month ago. Hasn’t been far of the mark of late and has each way claims.

Live And Free

Live And Free is having his run back since finishing fourth in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Randwick on December 26. The five year old is yet to win first up from five attempts and heads to Rosehill following a win in a 1200m Randwick barrier trial on April 9.
