The ever-confident Gai Waterhouse has a lot at stake at this year’s Golden Slipper Day, with the possibility of a trifecta in the big race and a number of other favourites scattered throughout the support events. Waterhouse already has an amazing record in the Golden Slipper with four wins, and only the very brave person would rule her out in 2013.

The famous trainer has three definite starters in the Golden Slipper on Saturday, April 6, with the possibility of a fourth horse making it into the fold. Overreach is the hot favourite for the big race, with Sweet Idea and Whittington also lining up and Shahad a possibility. “All I know is that I have three, possibly four outstanding chances in the race. I would not be surprised if they run 1-2-3.” said Waterhouse this week.

According to Waterhouse, the barrier draw is of little consequence, saying “It doesn’t matter to me, what they get, they get,” Waterhouse said. “I’ve never worried about barriers before, you can’t control the draw so you just have to deal with what happens.” However, if Overreach is to win on Saturday, she will have to overcome the curse on fillies who start as favourites, with no female favourite winning since Courtza in 1989.
However, the amazing filly has won the Widden Stakes and Reisling Stakes on her last two starts, and at $2.10, lots of people are expecting her to do very well. The Hall of Fame trainer certainly doesn’t have all her eggs in one basket however, with other Waterhouse trained horses featuring in some of the prominent support races on the day.
Gai Waterhouse will also be making her presence felt in the George Ryder Stakes and Queen of the Turf Stakes, with Pierro one of the hot favourites for the George Ryder and More Joyous reaching for her third Queen of the Turf win in three years. According to Waterhouse, “I can’t see Pierro being beaten… And More Joyous is so well placed against mares at set weights their biggest dangers are bad luck.”
