1. HEART OF DREAMS

Returned from an eleven month break with a pleasing fifth in the Group 2 P B Lawrence but from his wide draw last start, was forced to lead and couldn’t sustain the effort, weakening to finish ninth (beaten 6.7) behind SIncero. Much more favourable draw here and the mile will suit but has only managed a third from three attempts at the Valley.

Ethiopia winning today's feature race the Group 1 Australian Derby

2. MIDAS TOUCH

Former overseas stayer who showed some promise in his initial campaign last spring including running third in both the Makybe Diva and Underwood Stakes however, in three runs this year has been well accounted for on each occasion

3. LINTON

Lightly raced galloper who is now trained by John Sadler. He won his last start at Morphettville in the Group 3 RA Lee Stakes. Resumes here and also has the widest draw to contend with and certainly wasn’t expecting the $8.00 he opened up at in early markets.

4. REKINDLED INTEREST

Never really let down as followers would have hoped for first up a fortnight ago in the Memsie Stakes where he finished tenth of fifteen beaten 6 ¾ Oliver goes on for the first time and he is a horse that seems to save his best for this circuit where he has recorded two Group 2 wins and an unlucky third in last year’s Cox Plate. Prepared to give another go on the basis of his Valley form.

5. GREEN MOON

A promising type who caught the eye first up in the Memsie a fortnight ago where he didn’t have a great deal of room in the run home. Last start over a mile resulted in him winning the G2 Blamey Stakes in March. Second up at the mile and with the prospect of a sweet run just off the pace from his draw, he has to be included among the top chances.

6. ALCOPOP

Started favourite in the 2009 edition of the Melbourne Cup. In the seventeen runs since then, he has recorded two victories – last year’s Kilmore Cup and Listed Penny Edition Stakes in Adelaide. Has had two runs this time in and whilst the step up to the mile here will be a bonus, struggle to see him winning.

7. HAPPY TRIALS

Great run last start in the Memsie where from his wide draw, he uncharacteristically went forward and fought on well finishing second to Sincero beaten two lengths. Expect him to be ridden more quietly today and has a good record here at the Valley, expect him to be finishing hard.

8. MR. CHARD

Showed good promise as a 3yo winning the Listed Gothic Stakes and Group 3 Carbine Club in succession however, has struggled to regain that form and in seven subsequent runs, hasn’t managed a place. Well accounted for last week in a Listed race behind Fawkner beaten seven lengths.

9. SNEAK A PEAK

A former Italian galloper who has had one start in Australia for his trainer Peter Moody, that was a eighth (beaten 5.7) behind Chase The Rainbow. Just held his ground in that race which was dominated by those on pace, happy for him to have a try around the tight Valley.

10. TOKUGAWA

Lightly raced Choisir gelding from the Leon Corstens yard who has had two runs this time in, both here at the Valley for a win and at his most recent start, a third (beaten ¾) behind Sea Lord. The above two races were RST 89 events and the step up here in grade and to WFA, a forward showing would surprise.

11. SAPTAPADI

Former European galloper who competed and, was well beaten in, the leading staying races last Spring. Has had two runs in this time in the most recent being a ninth of thirteen (beaten 5.8) behind Prince of Capers. Not today.

12. ETHOPIA

Commenced his career with a third in a Sale Maiden and three runs later, was crowned the AJC Derby winner! Returns for his first run back since that win and will probably be best to watch him from a Cups perspective.

OVERVIEW

Two that really stand out here are Green Moon ($3.80) and Happy Trials ($7.50). Both were great in the Memsie, should be better for the runs and have drawn to be in comfortable spots throughout the race. The early favourite is Rekindled Interest ($3.50) and that is due to his exemplary record her at Moonee Valley rather than his effort first up. The early quote was shorter than expected and happy to wait to see if he drifts out before rushing in.
