Blake Shinn faints after winning Belle Of The Turf Stakes 2013

The Belle Of The Turf Stakes had a dramatic aside when winning jockey Blake Shinn fainted in the stewards room shortly after guiding Cathay Lady to victory in Thursday’s Gosford feature.

Shinn lifted Cathay Lady to a half-neck win in the 1600m Listed event but had to be attended to by ambulance officers after the race.

Shinn approached stewards to tell them he was feeling unwell and dehydrated.

“He fainted and was attended to by ambulance staff,” acting chief steward Greg Rudolph said.

“It was clear he was distressed.”

Shinn was stood down from his remaining rides.

“We’re just going to get some further medical advice. We’ll consider whether he should be stood down from riding tomorrow night and Saturday as well,” Rudolph said.

“That’s under consideration at the moment.”

Shinn was able to get the best out of Cathay Lady on the track, guiding the mare to her fourth straight win.

Cathay Lady led the field but looked a beaten horse halfway up the straight when Babel clearly hit the front.

Babel couldn’t go on with the job in the final 50m and Cathay Lady fought back to win with Shamardani 1-1/2 lengths away third.

“She had to lift off the canvas but I knew she would keep fighting,” Shinn said.

“It was just a matter of whether the others had a bit more brilliance but it came down to a hard slog and she prevailed.”

The running of the next race, the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m), was slightly delayed.

Shinn was booked to ride Takeover Target winner Testarhythm but was replaced by Brenton Avdulla.

Testarhythm won by 1-1/2 lengths over Soledad with a head to Uate third.
