Angst Stakes 2012 tips, preview and selections

Feature race of the day at Sydney’s Rosehill meeting is for the 4yo and Up Mares. A good quality field of thirteen runners line up for the 1500m journey and, as always is the case with these mares races, this is an open event with Nocturnelle ($4.20), Skyerush ($4.40) and Colorado Claire ($4.40) top of the market.

Brought to you by Horse Racing Tips

1. SKYERUSH

Smart mare from Guy Walter’s yard who won the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes over a mile last prep and returned with a great effort behind More Joyous in the G3 Golden Pendant. She ran third in this race last year second up (beaten 1.5 behind Little Surfer Girl), she has an awkward draw to overcome if but more than capable of going one better this year.

Odds: $4.40

2. COLORADO CLAIRE

She won the G2 Phar Lap Stakes over this course and trip when third up last prep and is third up here. Ran fifth the Sheraco and fourth in the Gold Pendant, both behind More Joyous in her two runs this prep. No More Joyous here today and drawn well in barrier one.

Odds: $4.60

3. FROMELLES

New Zealand mare who has six wins from thirty-five starts including the G3 Rotorua Cup (2200m). From a stable that knows what it takes to win a good race in Australia but her best results do appear to be over more ground.

Odds: $34.00

4. PANE IN THE GLASS

Showed plenty of promise and competed well in the major 2yo and 3yo races early in her career but has struggled to reproduce that form since. She’s had three runs back this time in the best of which was her latest – a fifth (beaten 3.4) in the G2 Shannon Stakes behind Rolling Pin (Fat Al ran third). Far better suited this grade and could be one at value.

Odds: $17.00

5. NOCTURNELLE

A smart mare from the Waller yard who has won five from eleven and, two of her last three including a last start victory in the Listed Tibbie Stakes (1400m) at Newcastle a little over two weeks ago. Had charmed run on that occasion but drawn wider here and may need a bit of luck – certainly has the talent but is short enough at $4.20

Odds: $4.00

6. SHE GOES TO RIO

Won the Canberra Guineas last prep, beating Detours in the process. Resumed with a third behind Miss Stellabelle and Irish Dream in the Listed Mona Lisa at Wyong but struggled in the Tibbie Stakes after settling on the speed – her normal racing pattern and finishing tenth of eleven. Will be prominent throughout and capable but last start was a concern.

Odds: $17.00

7. SENSE OF PRIDE

Imported runner with the Graeme Begg stable who has had one run in Australia, that being a good effort – with not much luck – behind Geblitz in BM 75 at Kensington. Will be better for that run but this is a significant jump in grade second up.

Odds: $41.00

8. GENERAL SNIPER

She’s won three of her twelve runs this time in – all that of which have been Cessnock and Wyong. In her past few visits to town, just found herself a length or two of the leaders and safe to say that’ll be the case again today.

Odds: $21.00

9. POTIONS

Second of the Patinack Farm runner (Pane In The Glass the other) who has had two runs in this prep – the latest a pleasing effort when closing well behind the smart Mahisara. She demonstrated her ability last prep with a third in the Listed Darley Crown at Hawkesbury behind More Strawberries and a luckless sixth (beaten less than 2) in the Dark Jewel at Scone. Third up this trip looks ideal and should be closing well late.

Odds: $10.00

10. FORARAINYDAY

Secret Savings mare who won her second race when first up at Wyong and backed that up with a solid performance behind More Joyous (3rd, beaten 3.8) at Rosehill two weeks back. Lightly raced and seems to be improving with each of her runs. Not to be underestimated.

Odds: $8.50

11. ANGELUS

Darley runner who has won three of her ten starts – they being over 1800, 1900 and 1600m. Good first up last prep when third to the smart Landing and stable will have her readied her for this with a barrier trial hit-out. She’ll get back but watch for her late.

Odds: $26.00

12. ZAUBERFLOTE – Scratched

13. TAVARNELLE

She produced a good finish last start to score in a BM 70 at Canterbury by a neck. That was her second win from eight starts and will notice a big difference in class in this race compared to that.

Odds: $26.00

OVERVIEW

Skyerush is the class runner, was great first up and is suited well by the Set Weight conditions but she’s drawn the outside gate and may need a little luck in running. Colorado Claire will make her own luck on pace and is the early pick at $4.20. Potions indicated last start she’s close to being back to her early career form and should get a solid enough pace given the size of this field, to be able to produce a finish at good each-way odds ($13.00) as is her stable-mate, Pane In The Glass.
